Storing Gold in Your SMSF: What Australian Trustees Need to Know
Gold and precious metals are ATO-approved SMSF investments — but the storage rules are strict. Here's what you need to get it right.
Self-managed super funds can legally hold physical gold and other precious metals as an investment — and with gold trading near all-time highs, more Australian SMSF trustees are exploring this option. But the ATO's rules around SMSF asset storage are strict, and non-compliance can expose trustees to significant penalties.
The sole purpose test. Every SMSF investment must be made with the sole purpose of providing retirement benefits to members. Gold held in an SMSF must therefore be stored in a way that prevents personal use or enjoyment. You cannot keep your SMSF gold at home, in your personal safe, or anywhere a fund member could access it.
The in-house asset rules. SMSF assets cannot be leased to, or used by, a related party of the fund. This means you cannot store SMSF gold at premises owned by a trustee or related entity.
Storage requirements. The ATO expects SMSF physical assets to be stored in a way that: (a) keeps them separate from the personal assets of members and trustees, (b) is clearly documented, and (c) is covered by appropriate insurance.
The practical solution for most SMSFs is a professional vault operator that provides full documentation. At Guardian, we issue SMSF-specific vault certificates, provide the documentation your auditor needs, and maintain complete separation between your SMSF holdings and any personal accounts.
We strongly recommend working with your SMSF auditor before making any allocation to physical gold. Our Standard and Premier plans include SMSF-compatible reporting designed to meet audit requirements — but your auditor is the authoritative source on your fund's specific obligations.
